East Hills church converts to apartment building
While churches have long served as spiritual homes, one in Grand Rapids’ East Hills neighborhood will be converted into new living spaces.
Brookstone Capital of Midland will soon begin transforming the Bethel Pentecostal Church at 834 Lake Drive SE into a 37 unit apartment building.
Grand Rapids-based Wolverine Building Group will manage the construction, which is set to get underway next month and be completed by the end of the year.
Progressive AE is doing the architectural and engineering work.
The renovation will keep the 90-year-old church’s current brick façade and columns, but the work will add a contemporary two-story addition to the building’s two stories.
When the project is finished, the former church will offer 51,000 square feet of affordable living space over the 37 apartments.

“This is a great use for the church building, and it will be good for the area,” said Aaron Jonker, a senior project manager for Wolverine Building Group.
“It’s a progressive neighborhood, with a number of retail, office and service establishments and a variety of dining destinations within a very walkable distance of the newly renovated building,” he added.
