Perrigo creates generic Nicorette
Smokers huddled out in the cold today may take heart with news out of Allegan that Perrigo (Nasdaq: PRGO) has launched a generic over-the-counter nicotine polacrilex mini lozenge — which it says is comparable to GlaxoSmithKline’s Nicorette.
One of the world’s largest manufacturers of generic prescription drugs and over-the-counter store-brand meds, Perrigo said the launch “represents the first to market nicotine mini lozenge products for the store-brand market,” which are sold under retailer and wholesalers’ store brands or independent brand labels.
The product is formulated to reduce smoking withdrawal symptoms, including nicotine craving.
Perrigo said the Nicorette mini lozenge is selling at retail at an annual rate estimated at more than $30 million.
“This launch strengthens Perrigo’s leading store-brand position in smoking-cessation products, which also includes coated and uncoated flavored gums and regular size lozenges,” said Joseph C. Papa, Perrigo chairman, president and CEO.
