Amway's One by One campaign touches 10 million children

Over the past decade, Amway has helped 10 million children around the world.

That’s the milestone Amway’s One by One campaign announced it has reached today on its 10th anniversary. Launched in 2003, One by One is a global campaign aimed at helping disadvantaged children through volunteer projects.

Since its creation, Amway and distributors have given $190 million globally to children’s programs, said Jesse Herstein, Amway’s senior corporate citizenship specialist. In addition, a day of global service is being planned for Nov. 20, he said.

Global projects have included providing meals for children in China, funding welfare centers in South Korea, building homes in Latin America, providing immunizations to children in Africa and distributing books in Thailand and South Africa.

“Each child helped and each life impacted is a testament to the incredible giving spirit of Amway distributors and employees,” said Amway President Doug DeVos. “We are inspired by these global citizens as they continue to make a difference around the world, one child at a time.”

In the United States, One by One’s programs have focused on providing after-school programs and playground equipment, said David Madiol, Amway’s manager of West Michigan community relations.

In the video below, Amway employees help build a new playground at York Creek Apartments in Comstock Park. 

In 2011, more than 285,000 children were impacted locally, he said, and 50 percent of Amway employees in West Michigan volunteer — a number above the national standard for a company of Amway’s size.

Madiol highlighted the Junior Achievement Foundation, a mentoring program where Amway volunteers teach kindergarten through high school classes on financial matters. He said he was also proud of Amway’s Grand Rapids Public Schools' School of Business, Leadership and Entrepreneurship at Ottawa Hills High School, which will produce its first graduating class this spring.
