Founders' Backstage Series meets its Doom

Founders Brewing Co. has announced the sixth beer to join its Backstage Series of experimental brews.

This installment will be named Doom, a barrel-aged Imperial IPA. Mostly, Founders has kept barrel aging to malt-forward beers, such as Dirty Bastard and Breakfast Stout, which turn into Backwoods Bastard and Kentucky Breakfast Stout or KBS.

The Backstage Series, which began in 2011, is an experimental lineup of beers previously only available in the taproom and at exclusive events.

The Doom brewing process will take Founders' Double Trouble Imperial IPA and age it in bourbon barrels for four months, resulting in a 10 percent ABV beer with strong hop character and bourbon notes.

“Doom is one of those beers that we’ve talked about releasing ever since we started the Backstage Series,” said Dave Engbers, Founders' co-founder and vice president of brand and education. “It’s hop heavy. It’s barrel aged. It’s unapologetic. It’s the definition of a Founders beer.”

Doom will be available in limited quantities across the company’s distribution footprint on April 22.

At Founders, the beer will have a ticketed release similar to BoltCutter and this year’s Kentucky Breakfast Stout. Tickets for Doom will go on sale at brownpapertickets.com on March 9 at 11 a.m., and the beer will be released to ticket holders at Founders between April 14 and April 19.

Doom will be available in a 750-ml bottle for $12.99.

Founders plans two more Backstage Series releases in 2013.

The Backstage Series' previous installments include Blushing Monk, Canadian Breakfast Stout, Curmudgeon’s Better Half, Frangelic Mountain Brown and BoltCutter.
