A sub franchise honoring both firefighters and fire-hot tastes is blazing its way into Grand Rapids.

Firehouse Subs, a fast casual, sub-sandwich restaurant chain, will open its first Grand Rapids location this week. The local franchise is owned by siblings Michael and Sally Riggs.

The Grand Rapids Firehouse will be open every day of the week from 10:30 a.m. until 10 p.m., starting Thursday, Feb. 21, at 2090 Celebration Drive NE, in Grand Rapids.

The franchise is known for its steaming premium meats and cheeses and its authentic firehouse style. The restaurant’s wall will bear a mural of the Grand Rapids Fire Department in action, according to a Firehouse Subs announcement.

Firehouse Subs has about 590 restaurants spread across 35 states and Puerto Rico.

The restaurant was founded almost 20 years ago in Jacksonville, Fla., by brothers Chris and Robin Sorensen, both former firefighters.

The Sorensens gave back to their firefighting roots in 2005 when Firehouse created the nonprofit Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, which provides funding, equipment and educational opportunities to first-responders and public safety organizations, according to the Firehouse website. The foundation has given about $5.7 million to hometown firefighters, $26,000 of which was donated in Michigan.
