Founders Brewing heads to the Great White North
Bottles of the beer went this month to Toronto for distribution throughout Ontario. The brewery hopes to add more brews to the Canadian lineup throughout the year. New provinces will follow in 2014 if all goes according to the company’s plan.
“There is a growing craft beer scene in Ontario that we’re excited to be a part of,” said Mike Stevens, co-founder, president and CEO of Founders. “Some great beer enthusiasts from our neighbor to the north have reached out to us over the past few years, and we’re looking forward to supporting that enthusiasm and to supporting recognition of the American craft beer scene internationally.”
The brewery is in the midst of a $26 million expansion that will increase the production capacity to 340,000 barrels a year, which helps quench demand and expand the distribution footprint. Founders also will move into new markets in the United States, including two markets in the south. Texas, Florida and Maryland could see the brewery’s beer in April. Those markets hinge on contract negotiations with distributors.
Texas will be the farthest west Founders has shipped.
West Virginia, Tennessee and Delaware also are set for the introduction of Founders in 2013.
