Wilcox Park is the winner of the My GR City Points makeover contest and will receive the $50,000 prize for enhancements.

Grand Rapids residents had the opportunity to donate their My GR City Points to their favorite park, and thousands of contributors donated more than 4 million points during the contest.

At the close of March 31, Wilcox Park had received 962,601 points. Runners-up Riverside Park, with 642,838 points, and Cherry Park, with 600,866 points, will each receive $10,000 for “spruce-ups” as well.

City residents will have the opportunity to provide input on the improvements they’d like to see the prize money put toward, and special improvement events will be held at each park starting in the summer.

The prize money was provided by the City of Grand Rapids from its existing parks budget.

“The money was money that was going to be spent on parks anyway, but now it’s going to be distributed, essentially, how citizens are saying they want it distributed,” said Jasmine Olsen, program coordinator.

The My GR City Points rewards program was introduced as a way for individuals and businesses to connect. Individuals earn points through recycling and volunteering, which they can then redeem at local businesses for discounts on products and services.
