New major gifts officer selected
Lax

The American Red Cross of West Michigan has named Kate Lax its new major gifts officer for the region. Lax will build and maintain relationships with individuals, companies and foundations to establish sponsorships, grants and gifting programs. Lax previously was assistant director of development in the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University and also worked in development at Stanford University.

ACCOUNTING

Crowe Horwath LLP announced it has promoted Troy La Huis to partner.

H&S Companies announced HR manager Travis Sinquefield has earned a Professional In Human Resources designation from the HR Certification Institute.

Joel Mitchell has joined Plante Moran PLLC as a partner. Mitchell concentrates his practice in international tax, with an emphasis on global tax compliance, financial reporting, repatriation planning and global structuring. Plante Moran also announced it was named Employer of the Year at the International Accounting Bulletin Awards.

LKF Marketing, Kalamazoo, has received national certification as a Women’s Business Enterprise from the Women’s Business Enterprise Council – Great Lakes.

ARCHITECTURE & ENGINEERING

The University of Michigan board of regents has approved Integrated Architecture’s design for a three-story, 10,200-square-foot Donald R. Shepherd Softball Center. Construction of the $5.4 million facility is scheduled to begin after the spring softball season.

ASSOCIATIONS

The American Subcontractors Association announced the election of Jack Austhof, president of Sobie Co., Dutton, as president of its national chapter.

AWARDS

FASTSIGNS of Grand Rapids was named one of the top 25 centers in the country out of a network of more than 450 at the 2013 FASTSIGNS convention, receiving the CEO Circle Award.

Kent District Library has received Lighthouse recognition by the Michigan Quality Council for its efforts in quality excellence initiated in 2012. KDL is the first public library in Michigan to initiate the MQC’s review process, a multi-year effort to ensure taxpayer dollars are used to the fullest potential.

Michigan Pomesters has named Jim Robinette Apple Man of the Year.

Pat Cook, a member of Quota International of Grand Rapids, was named 2013 Volunteer of the Year by the Quota International We Share Foundation. The annual honor is bestowed to local club members who embody the spirit of volunteerism.

Carmichael Heating & Air Conditioning was honored at the annual Bryant Dealer meeting with a Tier 1 Medal of Excellence Award.

Elzinga & Volkers Construction Professionals announced the additions of Dan Faulkner, field manager, and Sue Harrington, facilities service department coordinator.

Food business incubators Fair Food Matters’ Can-Do Kitchen and The Starting Block announced the graduation of TCB Food Processing LLC, which produces hot and mild asparagus guacamole and asparagus salsa. The products now are produced in a new facility in Lawrence, which enables the company to increase production by 50 percent.

GRANTS

Michigan Center for Student Success has awarded a $75,000 Michigan Pathways to Credentials grant to Grand Rapids Community College’s job training program. The grant will be spread over two years and will increase support of adult learners by helping them find sustainable employment and continue their job training education and credential building.

Grand Valley Health Plan founding president and CEO Roland Palmer announced the completion of his planned transition to focus on his role as president and chairman of GVHP’s parent company, Grand Valley Health Corp.
