Spectrum Health announced Tuesday that its board of directors, the Mecosta County Medical Center board of trustees and the Mecosta County Board of Commissioners have approved resolutions allowing the Big Rapids hospital to join Spectrum on July 1.

“Spectrum Health has had a strong relationship with Mecosta County Medical Center for many years. We share a commitment to quality and patient care,” said Richard C. Breon, president and CEO of Spectrum Health. “This agreement allows MCMC to provide its patients with a broader, more coordinated array of services.”

MCMC’s integration into Spectrum Health will become effective July 1, to allow for planning of a smooth transition, according to Spectrum officials.

“Our patients will benefit from expanded clinical services and access to additional expertise that is unmatched in our region,” said Sam Daugherty, CEO of MCMC. “We look forward to serving our patients with the same commitment to excellence and quality care that has been our focus for more than 100 years.”

Mecosta County Medical Center

The first community hospital in Big Rapids dates back to 1879, but a series of three hospitals were destroyed by fire through 1919.

The successor organization is MCMC, which was founded in 1926, and is, today, a 74 bed acute-care hospital serving Mecosta County and the surrounding region.

MCMC is located approximately one block from the campus of Ferris State University in Big Rapids. MCMC also includes Mecosta Health Services, a multi-specialty practice as a rural health clinic located in Big Rapids and the nearby Canadian Lakes area.

MCMC offers personalized primary and specialty medical care in emergency medicine and acute inpatient and outpatient care, medical, surgical, birthing, rehabilitation, home health care and occupational wellness services.

Spectrum Health

The Spectrum Health Hospital Group has a large footprint in the region: nine hospitals, including Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital; 130 ambulatory and service sites; the Spectrum Health Medical Group and West Michigan Heart physician groups, totaling 751 providers and Priority Health, a health insurance plan with 600,000 members.

According to Spectrum, it is West Michigan’s largest employer with 19,100 employees.
