It’s a big month for local custom cake and dessert business The Cakabakery. After four years in operation, the bakery is moving into its first retail location, as well as making its national TV debut as a competitor on Food Network’s "Cupcake Wars."

The bakery, owned and operated by Jason Kakabaker, will move into the former The Local Epicurean location in Eastown, at 1436 Wealthy Street, and will begin offering grab-and-go desserts for the first time.

Dessert items include cupcakes, cookies, cake pops and caramel corn, as well as specialty dessert cheesecake, tarts and dinner-plate cakes.

The Cakabakery uses raw ingredients for all of its products, rather than mixes and prefabricated items.

“We feel very fortunate to be able to open our first bakery in the wonderful and historic windmill building,” Kakabaker said. “It’s so unique and quirky — kinda like us.”

The new space will offer Kakabaker the opportunity to offer classes: simple building, decorating and styling classes and some more advanced topics.

The new location will also provide catering space and a special-events venue. The courtyard space will be available for small events and can host up to 20 guests.

To help with events, Cakabakery is also offering event planning services and catering packages.

In between it all, The Cakabakery will get a chance to showcase its work on national TV on Sunday on Food Network’s popular show "Cupcake Wars."
