Dermatologists spotlight melanoma

Staff members of The Skin Revitalizing Center and of The Dermatology Offices of Drs. Jack A. Dekkinga and Gina C. Ang donned special T-shirts for Melanoma Awareness Day in tribute to Jillian Hayes, a Hudsonville resident who died from melanoma in December at age 23. Practitioners say melanoma is the most common form of cancer for those age 25-29.

AWARDS

Practice Greenhealth has recognized Metro Health Hospital with the Environmental Leadership Circle Award for a fifth year in a row. The award recognizes health care facilities that exemplify environmental excellence and set the highest standards for environmental practices in health care.

Registered dietician Staci Shell has received the Young Dietitian of the Year Award from the Michigan Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

BANKING

Bank of Holland announced the addition of Tom Frost, relationship manager, in its Grand Rapids office.

Terry Walter has joined Independent Bank as the Saginaw area residential lending sales manager. He will be responsible for originating mortgages in Saginaw and the Thumb area.

EDUCATION

Davenport University announced the appointment of Dr. Walter JH O’Neill as executive vice president for enrollment and student services. He currently is senior associate vice president for enrollment management at Roosevelt University in Chicago, and will begin at Davenport June 17.

Dr. Carla M. Koretsky, professor of geosciences and associate dean of Western Michigan University’s Lee Honor’s College, has been named dean of the college effective July 1.

Grand Rapids Community College board of trustees member Terri A. Handlin announced her resignation. She will serve through Aug 31; her current term ends Dec 31, 2014.

Argus Financial Consultants announced Lisa Wilkie has returned to the firm as a marketing associate.

FOUNDATIONS

The Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation announced it has named Michele Suchovsky executive director, succeeding Susan Heartwell, who retires June 30. Suchovsky formerly was executive director of Artists Creating Together, previously Very Special Arts.

GRANTS

Grand Rapids Community College will expand its Pathways to Success program with a $700,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, allowing additional families who need post-secondary educational and employment services to find employment. The foundation also awarded GRCC a matching grant of $30,000 to conduct an inclusion impact assessment that would allow the college to look at its campus from an inclusion versus a diversity perspective.

HEALTH

Grand Rapids Ophthalmology announced Dr. Marcus Muallem implanted the first iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass Stent in Michigan, used for patients who have both cataracts and glaucoma as a treatment option to reduce eye pressure.

Dr. Sandra A. Rempel has been named Spectrum Health’s new vice president of research.

HOSPITALITY

Amway Hotel Corp. announced Jenifer Cutter has been appointed general manager of the Downtown Courtyard by Marriott. She will oversee 100-plus associates in maintaining the hotel’s high occupancy and exceptional guest-service scores.

Preferred Benefits Inc. has been recognized by Priority Health as an elite agency.

BTI Consulting Group announced it has placed Warner Norcross & Judd LLP in an elite group of law firms. Its survey analyzed 500 firms and identified nine key factors clients rely on to differentiate law firms, including innovation, value and client recommendations.

The State Bar of Michigan Animal Law Section presented May 2013 Cooley Law School graduate Renee Edmondson with the Wanda A. Nash Award, created to honor a Michigan law student for contributions to animal law.

MANUFACTURING

Cascade Engineering announced the promotion of Christina Keller to president of CK Technologies, a key Cascade business unit specializing in innovative technology for the commercial truck and bus industry. Keller will lead business strategy and operations at four facilities in Mount Airy, N.C., Montpelier, Ohio, and Brownsville and Forth Worth, Texas, comprising more than 500 employees.

The American Heart Association Heart Ball announced its chairs are Joseph Calvaruso and Doyle Hayes. They are joined by the executive leadership team of Michael Campbell, Michael Price, Sharon Buursma, Linda Rinker, Steven Ender and Susan Hickey.

PUBLIC SERVICE

Gov. Rick Synder announced the reappointment of James “Chip” Falahee, Bronson senior vice president of legal and legislative affairs, as chairman of the State Certificate of Need Commission for a three-year term. The governor also reappointed Paul Isely of Grand Rapids to Michigan’s Utility Consumer Participation Board, and for a third term, reappointed Peaches McCahill of Grand Rapids to the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness.

Griffin Properties announced it has relocated its office to 557 Crescent St. NE. Also, founder/lead listing agent Diane Griffin is now the company’s CEO; Brooke Powers has been promoted to chief operating officer; and Lisa Costanza, CEO of Griffin Property Management, now serves as Griffin Properties lead buyer agent.

RETAIL

DP Fox Ventures announced the promotions of Susan Howe to vice president of finances for Fox Motors, and Sarah Raymond to manager of marketing and communications. Howe will oversee all financial activity for Fox Motors and continue accounting oversight with Princess Cays. Raymond will manage the communication and branding initiatives of Fox Motors and will have an increased role in the communications and online presence of other DP Fox affiliates.

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians announced Matt Harkness has been named chief operating office of its three Four Winds Casino properties. Harkness will continue as general manager of Four Winds New Buffalo. Frank Freedman has been named general manger of Four Winds Hartford and Four Winds Dowagiac; he will continue as assistant general manager of Four Winds New Buffalo.
