Downtown Holiday Inn adopts paperless check-in

Holiday Inn Grand Rapids Downtown is adopting a new paperless check-in process that is expected to save the hotel more than 33,000 sheets of paper per year.

Guests will now check in on electronic tablets.

The process will save the equivalent of four trees a year.

“Many consumers today are used to electronic signature pads,” said Heather Emmons, the hotel's director of guest services. “We imagine this change will be quite seamless.”

The downtown Holiday Inn is a member of the Green Hotels Association and earned the Leader Certification from the Michigan Green Lodging Association, the highest level of environmental recognition available to hotels in the state.

The hotel said it has a recycling and food waste composting program that diverts several tons of waste from landfills each year, and it works to purchase recycled goods in every area of the hotel.

“Buying recycled is an important conservation step,” said Ellen Markel, the hotel’s general manager. “But using less in the first place is even better.”
