Inspired artists now will have something to drink at ArtPrize this fall.

Founders Brewing Co. announced today its special IPA for the fifth edition of ArtPrize, which runs Sept. 18 to Oct. 6.

The IPA, named Inspired Artist Black IPA, was brewed using midnight wheat and a variety of hops with tropical notes.

This announcement comes on the heels of a deal made in April that made Founders the official brewery of ArtPrize for the next five years. The sponsorship will ensure Founders has beer and promotion at all ArtPrize events. It also gives the brewery permission to use the ArtPrize identity on co-packaged items.

Founders said in a written statement it expects to release a new beer in each of the next five years to coincide with ArtPrize.

“When we started talking with ArtPrize about a partnership, we knew we wanted to make a unique beer in honor of the annual event,” said Dave Engbers, co-founder and vice president of brand and education at Founders Brewing Co. “Black IPA is a boundary-pushing style that felt like a good fit to pair with ArtPrize, an organization that encourages conversations around the definition of art.”

The Inspired Artist Black IPA will come in around 7.5 percent alcohol by volume and plenty of hops balanced by the black wheat base.

Kendall College of Art and Design graduate Kevin O'Rouke designed the label for the beer. O'Rouke also has been featured on concert posters for bands such as Sonic Youth and The Flaming Lips.

Proceeds from the sales of the beer, including draft and six-packs, will support the future endeavors of ArtPrize.

“Art brings us together in conversation, just like the experience with a good beer,” said Christian Gaines, executive director of ArtPrize. “We are thrilled to have Founders as our official brewery and Inspired Artist Black IPA as a new, specially co-packaged beer to enhance the community’s experience.”

The beer will be available across Founders’ Michigan distribution footprint on Aug. 26.
