Sports commission picks a sly mascot
During last Friday’s opening ceremonies at Fifth Third Ballpark, the sports commission introduced its newest member, Felix the Fox, as its official mascot.
Felix made his debut then by beating the Big Lug, the mascot of baseball’s Lansing Lugnuts, in the championship match of a jousting tournament.
“Felix is a natural addition to the West Michigan Sports Commission team and the region in general. We think the community will love his social, yet competitive, nature as he appears at sporting events and tournaments around town to cheer on teams and interact with fans,” said Mike Guswiler, president of the WMSC.
The sports commission chose Felix because the red fox is found throughout the state. In addition, the selection was inspired by a design Alyssa Parsons, a senior at Kendall College of Art and Design, created. Parsons won the Who’s Your Mascot Challenge the commission initiated in January, and she also successfully suggested the fox’s name.
Felix lives downtown, stands 6’2” on certain occasions and wears size 22 double-wide white sneakers with red and yellow Velcro straps. He reportedly likes to prey on oversized characters from competing regions like central and southeast Michigan.
Fans can request that Felix appear at their events by going to the West Michigan Sports Commission website. The sports commission suggests that all requests be made at least a month in advance and a donation of $40 is made to the organization.
