It took Jody Talbert more than two years of work, sweat and cash, but the owner of Brick Road Pizza Co. has finally done it.

He built a full-service bar at his restaurant in Grand Rapids' East Hills neighborhood.

“I did a lot of the work myself. Pretty much the only thing I didn’t do was the plumbing and the electric. I’ve got about $70,000 into the whole thing,” he said. “It’s in the back of the restaurant. It was formerly an office/storage area. We’ve moved the office downstairs.”

The new space

Talbert’s new 800-square-foot bar seats about 13 people.

It offers a menu of cocktails and 12 brew taps, which are mostly Michigan microbrews, including brewery names like Founders, Dark Horse, New Holland and Perrin.

Talbert’s bar expansion also added a window, a bathroom and a few extra tables of seating to his pizza restaurant, at 1017 Wealthy St. SE.

Same feel

Although a bar can sometimes liven up a location, Talbert thinks his establishment, known as a family friendly environment, won’t change its atmosphere too much.

The bar just gives his customers more options, he said.

“I don’t think it’s going to affect the atmosphere,” he said. “It’s still a family atmosphere, still the same hours and same menu.”
