The multi-disciplinary physician group HealthCare Midwest has been acquired by Bronson Healthcare and is now known as Bronson HealthCare Midwest.

All HealthCare Midwest medical practices and outpatient services have new names, but the physicians, their staffs, phone numbers and their locations remain unchanged, acording to an announcement by Bronson Healthcare. The group has served southwest Michigan since 1993.

Headquartered in Kalamazoo, Bronson HealthCare Midwest employs more than 400, including 80 physicians and mid-level providers.

It provides care in a variety of specialties at locations in Kalamazoo, Portage, Battle Creek, Paw Paw, South Haven, Coldwater, Three Rivers, Sturgis and Allegan.

Bronson said the hospital system has had a longstanding relationship with HealthCare Midwest, and the July 1 acquisition will allow the two entities to be in a better position to handle emerging changes in the national health care delivery system.

Plans for the partnership were first announced last November.

Organizational structure

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Bronson, a not-for-profit health system serving 10 counties in southwest Michigan, Bronson HealthCare Midwest will have a physician-led operational structure, and Jim McKernan will continue to serve as its senior executive.

An operating committee made up of Bronson HealthCare Midwest physicians and Bronson Healthcare executives will work collaboratively to set direction and oversee operations.

Overall governance will come from the Bronson Healthcare system board of directors.

“This is a great step forward for all of us,” said Dr. Robert Isacksen, a member of the Bronson HealthCare Midwest operating committee. “Bronson and HealthCare Midwest share a passion for excellence and for making decisions based on what is in the best interest of the patient. Aligning our organizations will help us continue to advance clinical quality, integrate information technology and recruit and retain a solid base of excellent providers. It’s a win-win for our community and for our patients.”

Bronson Healthcare has a total of 7,100 employees, including more than 1,000 medical staff and 812 licensed beds.

It is the largest healthcare employer in southwest Michigan with services at more than 60 locations.
