Spectrum Health has been ranked among the best hospitals in the nation in three medical specialties by U.S. News & World Report in its 2013-14 Best Hospitals rankings.

Additionally, Spectrum Health is recognized as high performing in nine medical specialties.

Among the Best Hospitals in Michigan, the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers in Ann Arbor ranks first, while Spectrum ranks third.

The overall Best Hospital in the nation this year is Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. None of the top 18 nationally is in Michigan.

Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital and Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital are ranked 20th in gynecology, 25th in diabetes and endocrinology and 40th in pulmonology in the national rankings. This is the first year the Spectrum hospitals were nationally ranked in pulmonology.

The Spectrum hospitals also are recognized as high-performing in cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology, geriatrics, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics and urology.

The Best Hospitals 2013-14 rankings evaluated approximately 5,000 hospitals, with 147 nationally ranked in at least one of 16 medical specialties. The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

The Best Hospitals are grouped into 16 separate specialties: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; ophthalmology; orthopedics; psychiatry; pulmonology; rehabilitation; rheumatology and urology.

In four specialties, ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation and rheumatology, the hospitals are also ranked by their reputation among physicians, as determined by surveys.

The Best Hospitals in Grand Rapids, in the ranking by metro areas, are Spectrum and Mercy Health Saint Mary’s.
