Dredging is planned at a West Michigan harbor after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a contract for the work.

The Corps says the contract for Manistee Harbor dredging and other work totals more than $473,000.

The project calls for BayShore Contractors of Grand Rapids to dredge 24,500 cubic yards of material from the harbor and deposit it south of the harbor.

Coal, sand, salt and general cargo are transported through Manistee Harbor.

Manistee is among a number of Great Lakes harbors in West Michigan being dredged this year, following record low water levels in the region.
