Meijer plans to hire 880 employees in West Michigan

Retailers race to reach shoppers

Meijer revealed today that it plans to hire 9,000 new employees in the coming months — with 4,400 of those positions available in Michigan and 880 of the openings in West Michigan.

Busy seasons

Meijer said that strong business, company growth — and confidence in the upcoming fall and holiday shopping seasons are behind its hiring plans.

“Meijer has already opened five of the six new stores planned for this year, with another nine opening next year,” said Janet Emerson, executive vice president of operations for the Grand Rapids-based retailer. “Our continued growth along with the upcoming holiday selling season make it imperative that we increase our staffing to properly operate our stores and deliver on the Meijer promise of providing exceptional customer service.”

Of the nine stores scheduled to open in 2014, two are in Michigan: South Haven and Alma. New Meijer stores require 200-250 employees to operate.

Meijer’s hiring plans are down by approximately 25 percent from last year. The retailer planned to hire 12,000 new employees for the 2012 holiday season.

Roles

Most of the positions will be part-time and openings vary depending on stores.

Meijer noted that while traditional retail positions, such as stocker sand cashiers are needed, there are also opportunities in more specialized roles, such as meat cutters and cake decorators, which often lead to future leadership opportunities.

“While many of these opportunities are part-time, these jobs can provide a gateway to a full-time career at Meijer,” said Kevin Wiederhold, vice president of human resources for retail operations. “As we continue to grow, we are frequently looking to fill our ongoing part-time and full-time needs. These positions provide a great opportunity to get your foot in the door and demonstrate success within a growing company.”

Process

Interested candidates are asked to complete an online application at jobs.meijer.com.

Candidates may also complete an online application at employment kiosks located at the front of most Meijer stores.

Local store management will then follow-up with qualified candidates.

During the online application process, prospective team members can indicate their store preference.

Michigan: 4,400 team members

Ohio: 1,600 team members

Indiana: 1,800 team members

Illinois: 900 team members

Kentucky: 500 team members
