GRandJazzFest jams downtown
Jazz music lovers, get ready for the second annual GRandJazzFest at Rosa Parks Circle this weekend.
For the second time, GRandJazzFest will bring some of the most talented jazz artists to downtown Grand Rapids , including Chicago-based guitarist and vocalist Nick Colionne, who is headlining the festival.
One more day
The free festival is this Saturday and Sunday and presented by the DTE Energy Foundation.
The event has been expanded this year from one day to two, due to the event’s success and popularity last year.
“We’re delighted to expand the festival to two days and bring internationally known jazz guitarist and vocalist Nick Colionne and his band to Grand Rapids to headline our festival,” said Audrey Sundstrom, GRandJazzFest founder. “The complete lineup is an eclectic offering that expresses the full diversity of the jazz art form.”
In keeping with a format modeled after the highly successful River Raisin Jazz Festival in Monroe, GRandJazzFest 2013 will open with the returning Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra.
“We always plan to open with big-band jazz, and here in Grand Rapids, that big band is our own Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra,” Sundstrom said.
Lansing-based saxophonist Phil Denny and popular local vocalist Edye Evans Hyde return. Hyde will perform with GRJO and also perform with her own band.
Street-funk-blues-rock band The Kinsey Report hails from Gary, Ind., and the other bands and performers are all from Michigan.
Restaurant Week GR
The festival occurs during Experience Grand Rapids’ popular Restaurant Week GR.
By design, GRandJazzFest organizers want festivalgoers to enjoy the downtown Grand Rapids scene by enjoying a dinner or other refreshment in between sets.
“Part of our mission is to support local businesses — so between sets, we want people to check out downtown Grand Rapids’ great restaurants, pubs, shops and more.” Sundstrom said.
