Grandwich 2013 crowns 'Sandwich of the Year'

Grand Rapids has spoken, and the Grandwich 2013 champion has been crowned.

McKay’s Downtown’s Royale with Bleu Cheese has earned the title of Grandwich 2013.

Royale with Bleu Cheese was selected Friday afternoon by a panel of judges gathered for a tasting of the 10 finalists at Rosa Parks Circle.

The top 10 had been whittled down by a vote from nearly 30 sandwich entries.

The $9 sandwich includes S&S Lamb Ham-burger (grass-fed beef, cut with ground ham), S&S Lamb candied bacon, house-made bleu cheese ice cream coin, Old World Olive Press chocolate balsamic reduction, spicy micro greens, topped with shaved pickled beet relish and stacked between a G&A Detroit Baking Co. brioche bun.

The Grandwich 2013 will be available at McKay’s Downtown throughout the year.

People’s Choice

Grand Rapids Brewing Co. took home the People’s Choice award for its Colt 45.

The $11 Colt 45 includes a Heffron Farms short rib, house-smoked bacon, cha cha sauce, sunny egg and crunchy slaw, served on a Nantucket Baking Co. brewers grain bun.

This is the second year that the Grandwich competition was held.

Nicole Infante came up with the idea and presented it in 2011 during a March 5x5 night.

Though the idea was not selected, the Downtown Alliance and Neighborhood Ventures approached her about making the competition a reality.
