Gov. Snyder announces plans to attend GRBJ 40 Under Forty
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder will speak Oct. 16 to the Grand Rapids Business Journal 40 Under Forty class of 2013, highlighting the importance of young talent and employment creation in the state, of which their individual achievements are integral.
Snyder’s executive office announced his intention today, indicating his continued commitment to young Michigan talent and unwavering support of creating a climate for growing and retaining that talent within the state.
He has repeatedly said that Michigan is the “come back state” and has insisted on focusing on the positive achievements of what he’s called “the state’s greatest resource — its people.”
Business Journal staff was told that the Governor is particularly looking forward to highlighting job retention and growth related to the achievements of the 40 Under Forty group.
All 40 individuals will be profiled in the Business journal and at grbj.com in October, prior to the event. The 2013 40 Under Forty class of business leaders will be profiled in a special magazine supplement to the Oct. 15 issue of the Business Journal.
The 40 individuals represent four counties, including Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon and Newaygo. Staff provided Snyder an example of one of the 40, Mike Lomonaco, whose firm, OST/Open Systems Technology, in July expanded to open a new office in Detroit.
Honorees were selected by a panel of judges that included Bob Thomas, executive director of Michigan Chamber of Commerce Foundation, which includes Leadership Michigan; Lou Glazer, president of Michigan Future; and Jeanne Englehart, 2013 ATHENA winner, tech business owner, former Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce president and partner, The Charter Group.
The judges noted that, once again, this has been an extremely difficult year to name just 40 honorees, especially in a year marking a record number of 143 nominations.
For the first time, the Business Journal also will recognize one 40 Under Forty alumni, first selected more than a decade ago.
Sam Cummings, with CWD Real Estate Investment, has been selected as the Distinguished Alumnus for his achievements during the years since he turned 40. Cummings was honored in the 40 Under Forty classes of 2002 and 2005.
A reception/networking event to honor the group is scheduled for Oct. 16, at the Goei Center, 818 Butterworth St. SW. The 40 Under Forty reception will begin at 5 p.m. and conclude at 8 p.m.
