The new HopCat East Lansing was already looking to go big with its 100-tap bar — Michigan’s largest draft-beer setup.

But at 11 a.m. on Thursday, the restaurant and bar said it plans to open its doors for the first time and set a “world record” for the most brews on tap from a single brewery, with 100 beers on tap from Bellaire-based Short’s Brewing Co.

All of Short’s year-round and seasonal beers will be available, as well as plenty that have never been released.

The previous tap-takeover record was 62 by Sierra Nevada and Cannery Row Brewing Co.

The event has been six months in the making.

“We wanted to launch HopCat East Lansing with a bang by doing something unique that no one has ever done before,” said Mark Sellers, owner of BarFly Ventures, HopCat’s holding company. “This partnership with Short’s, another Michigan company that makes some of the world’s most creative beers, is a reflection of our commitment to supporting Michigan breweries.”

HopCat and Short’s

Sellers is a graduate of Michigan State University’s Broad School of Business and spent 11 years in the area, and one of Short’s partners, Scott Newman-Bale, went to Michigan State as well.

Short’s owner, Joe Short, has held an annual tap takeover at HopCat Grand Rapids for his birthday in recent years.

“Working with HopCat to attempt this record has been one of the most exciting challenges we’ve accepted at Short’s,” said Short. “We’ve brought out all of our year-round brews, some seasonal favorites and an amazing selection of some new, experimental recipes that guests will be able to try for the first time.”

Crack Fries for a year

But Thursday isn’t all about beer.

The first 200 patrons in the door will receive an order of the restaurant’s famous Crack Fries once a week for a year, and every guest in the door on Thursday will be given a free order of the fries.
