Contractor moves into $4.7M Grand Rapids HQ
A sleek and stylish $4.7-million structure will make its debut next week in Grand Rapids.
Rockford Construction Co. will officially unveil its new headquarters, at 601 First Street NW, at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
The 38,000 square foot, multi-level building the company built reflects its environmental conscience.
Rockford used the remnants of recycled ash trees for a portion of the work.
The firm installed a raised floor system that allows for a simpler re-design of office spaces, and it makes technology upgrades easier to perform.
Rockford also topped the building with a green roof. The roof covers 3,300 square feet and contains a variety of sedum plants, perennials and ornamental grasses.
Grand Rapids-based Advanced Green Architecture installed it in July, and the soil depth ranges from three to six inches. The grasses were planted in the deeper soil.
The roof will cut the firm’s cost to heat and cool the building and will divert rainwater from the city’s sewer system.
The Business Journal has rated Rockford Construction as the top green contractor in West Michigan.
Integrated Architecture in Grand Rapids designed the building, which is a mixture of new construction and renovation work.

All 225 of the builder’s employees will be stationed there, and Rockford expects that its staff will grow by another five percent in the next two years.
Northwest Grand Rapids
The decision by Rockford to locate its headquarters at First Street and Seward Avenue NW has been welcomed by many on the city’s near northwest side and is seen by business owners located there as a vital first step in a redevelopment of the neighborhood.
Rockford is getting ready to build a new residential development at Douglas Street and Seward Avenue NW, just two blocks south of its building.
The project will offer market-rate rental apartments in four new structures.
Rockford Construction invested $4.7 million into its new headquarters, which sits on the former site of the Miller Products Co.
Rockford bought the manufacturer’s two buildings and parking lots last year and spent $1.1 million of its total investment to remediate the property.
