Gov. Snyder appoints WMU's Ola Smith to State Board of Accountancy

Gov. Rick Snyder has appointed Ola Smith, an associate professor of Accountancy at Western Michigan University, to the State Board of Accountancy.

Smith’s job will be to represent educators and certified public accountants on the nine-member board, which oversees certification and licensure matters for public accountants and their firms.

Accounting career

Smith, who’s worked at WMU for 13 years, is the winner of the WMU Research Development Award and the Platinum Award from the Division of Multicultural Affairs.

Previously, she worked for Ameritech Corp., Deloitte, Barrow, Aldridge & Co. and the Internal Revenue Service.

She earned her bachelor degree in accounting from the University of Detroit, and her MBA in finance from Mercy College of Detroit.

Smith received her CPA license and doctoral degree in accounting from Michigan State University.
