Italian restaurant and tavern enters downtown

A home-style Italian restaurant and tavern plans to open its doors downtown by the end of the year.

616 Development has found what should be a tasty tenant for its ground floor at the Kendall Building, one that will likely fill the east end of Monroe Center with some tempting sweet-smelling aromas of Italy.

Osteria Rossa LLC, headed by Christopher Perkey, has signed a 10-year lease for the street-level space at 16 Monroe Center NW.

The firm plans to open a casual tavern and home-style Italian restaurant there that will feature classic Italian foods, made with local ingredients and served in a rustic setting.

Osteria Rossa will spend $545,000 to build out its location and have seating for 100 customers.

“It will take up the entire ground floor in the Kendall Building,” said Eric Pratt, project manager for the Downtown Development Authority. “It will fit in nicely.”

Liquor license

The DDA approved Osteria Rossa’s request for a downtown Class C liquor license on Wednesday.

That request will go to the city commission for its approval before it goes to Lansing for final authorization.

The downtown version of the license costs $20,000, is only available to businesses located within a recognized downtown district and is non-transferable.

Kendall Building

With the recent signing of Osteria Rossa as a tenant, the Kendall Building is essentially filled.

616 Development and 616 Lofts, the company’s property management division, are moving into the second floor soon and just two of the dozen new apartments were available as of last week.

Before 616 Development took on the difficult renovation project, the Kendall Building sat vacant for close to three decades.
