Change Ups: Law firm marks fifth anniversary

Hilger Hammond PC recently celebrated its five-year anniversary as a law firm. What started in 2008 as a solo practice quickly grew as founding member Steve Hilger partnered with local attorneys Ben Hammond and Aileen Leipprandt to develop a firm that focuses on construction law, complex commercial litigation, arbitration and mediation services, as well as related real estate and business law. The firm eventually purchased and built out the second floor of the Minhaar Building in downtown Grand Rapids.

ACCOUNTING

Crowe Horwath LLP announced it has elected Rhonda Hulsmann, Jim O’Laughlin and Joe Tomaszewski as partners and Eric Durham as director.

McKeown, Kraai and Phillips PLC announced the promotion of Kyle McKeown to partner.

EDUCATION

Calvin College has been ranked 100th among national liberal arts colleges in the 2014 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges Guidebook.

Grand Rapids Community College and Western Michigan University announced they have signed an articulation agreement that will give GRCC Associate of Music degree students a seamless transfer to WMU’s music and music therapy programs.

Kendall College of Art and Design announced it has named Michele Bosak curator of exhibition. Vic Liptak will serve as the college’s interim dean.

Thomas M. Cooley Law School Associate Dean Nelson Miller and Professor Phillip J. Prygoski have been named two of the 26 Best Law Teachers in the United States by What The Best Law Teachers Do, Harvard University Press.

Victory Media has named Grace Bible College, Aquinas College and Grand Rapids Community College to its Military Friendly Schools list. The 2014 list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and their spouses as students.

GRANTS

Muskegon Rotary Club’s 1 in 21 Healthy Muskegon County initiative and the Community Foundation for Muskegon County announced $500 grants will be awarded to 10 projects that will help make their communities healthier. Details: grants at 1in21 dot org.

Berends Hendricks Stuit has retained its status of a Best Practices agency for the 20th consecutive year, as part of the Agents & Brokers of America best Practices Study Group.

Catholic Charities West Michigan has been reaccredited by the Council on Accreditation, which lasts for four years and demonstrates that CCWM implements high-performance standards and is delivering the highest quality services to all of its shareholders.

PUBLIC SERVICE

Gov. Rick Synder announced the following appointments: Julia Guevara of Grand Rapids to the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan; the reappointment of Catherine Garcia-Lindstrom of Walker to the Crime Victim Services Commission; the appointment of Sharon Conklin of Comstock Park to the Truck Safety Commission; and the appointments of Kim Dabbs, and Christian Gaines, both of Grand Rapids, to the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Warner Norcross & Judd LLP partner Jennifer L. Remondino has been appointed to serve a three-year term as a board member for the Michigan West Coast Chamber of Commerce. The organization represents more than 1,300 businesses in the Holland and Zeeland area.
