A longtime Grand Rapids destination for indulgent sweets is getting settled in its new Grandville home.

"Desperately needed" space

The shop in Bucktown shopping center combines the many tastes of Cookies by Design and Cupcake by Design into an 1,800-square-foot space.

The new shop, at 3080 44th St. SW, is 800 square feet larger than the retailer’s previous space on East Beltline, which it moved from this summer.

The extra room was “desperately needed,” said shop owner Jennifer Kok, and helps house six new baking and sales employees.

Kok said the move was inevitable and done to support product development to enhance the business.

“It’s hard. It’s a lot of transition work,” Kok said. “But sometimes small business owners get stuck in what they know, and it’s scary to take that risk and re-invest, but in the long run, it’s going to make our business better.”

Sugar rush

The shop features more than 300 available cookie bouquets and gift baskets, as well as 30 flavors of gourmet cupcakes.

The shop also features the addition of a Candy Emporium, with an assortment of classic treats.

“There’s barely room to turn around,” Kok said. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to better serve our friends through a bigger store, expanded hours and more products.”

Delivery reach

The by-design shops in West Bloomfield and Rochester Hills will remain open, Kok said, and the company is looking to expand its shipping business and delivery reach.

Kok added that although the shop is now in Grandville, it still has a 50-mile delivery radius, which should serve all of the Grand Rapids community.
