Cynthia Kay and Co. owner writes book on winning 'global clients'
A book about small business by Cynthia Kay was already in demand before she even sat down to write it.
The idea of Kay’s book — “Small Business for Big Thinkers: Unconventional Strategies to Connect With and Win Big” — was born from her interaction with the business community and reaction to speeches and lectures on business by Kay, a former WZZM investigative reporter and the president and owner Cynthia Kay and Company.
The firm has earned a number of awards, including twice being named one of West Michigan's 101 Best and Brightest Companies, and Kay has been named one of the 50 Most Influential Women multiple times by the Business Journal.
“People were asking how I’d manage to attract such large customers, and people were wondering how a small business in Michigan is doing work with these large global clients,” Kay said. “I was doing a lot of speeches and people kept asking where the book was.”
Kay spent “every spare moment” of the past year pulling together notes and interviews and has penned her anticipated debut as an author.
The 256-page book was released last month on Amazon.com and is published by the Career Press.
Kay’s book offers readers business strategies — many of them based on her own experiences with local businesses — on how to run a small business in a way that the owner can connect and even compete with big businesses in the market, Kay said, as well as how to evaluate if a small business should grow or not.
Kay said she discusses “the things I didn’t do well — the decisions I didn’t do right. I think too many books today make it sound easy. . . . Nothing could be further from the truth.”
The book has received favorable reviews from business leaders like Todd McCracken, president and CEO of the National Small Business Association, Jeff Beals, author of “Self Marketing Power and Selling Saturdays” and Kay’s own client, Brian Walker, CEO of Herman Miller.
