Subcontractors name Michigan Contractor of the Year
An Ada-based design and construction company has been named the 2013 Michigan Contractor of the Year by a statewide association of subcontractors.
For a second time, family owned Dan Vos Construction Company received the award from the American Subcontractors Association of Michigan, at the fourth annual MCOY Awards on Monday night. The sold-out event was held at the Frederick Meijer Garden & Sculpture Park.
Dan Vos Construction, which won the award in 2010 at the inaugural MCOY event, has been recognized every year at the MCOY awards.
Dan Vos, president of Dan Vos Construction, said living up to the MCOY award every year isn’t easy.
“You know, even though I could do without the stress of this Oscar award, it’s a pleasure to be back,” said Vos, who accepted the award. “It’s truly a thrill. When I talk to other folks about ASAM, people get a glimmer in their eye of what a special event this is. We’ve won plenty of awards over the years, but this is the one we really look forward to.”
The MCOY winner is determined by online voting, with ASAM members scoring the candidates on their performances in 10 categories: administrative procedures, bid ethics and practice, schedule coordination, safety, jobsite supervision, communication, project relations, lien processes, payment terms and quality workmanship.
National best practices
With this year’s MCOY award, Dan Vos Construction will now be nominated by ASAM as a candidate for the ASA National Construction Best Practices Awards, which recognize America’s “elite” prime contractors.
ASA will announce the Best Practices award winners in January. If Dan Vos Construction is selected, the firm will head out to an award convention in New Orleans in March.
Dan Vos Construction wasn’t the only contractor celebrating Monday night. ASAM also awarded two honorable mentions.
Tony Roussey, VP of operations at Elzinga & Volkers, said he was very happy with the firm's honor.
“Our customers will see it," Roussey said. "It is something we certainly can use in sales and marketing. It looks pretty cool on a resume.”
