HopCat Grand Rapids has been voted the second-greatest beer bar in the U.S. this year.

HopCat earned the ranking last month after CraftBeer.com took more than 5,000 nominations and 37,000 votes to decide the winners of its 2013 Great American Beer Bars competition.

This is second year in a row that HopCat has earned the No. 2 ranking from CraftBeer.com.

Overall, HopCat trails just MeKong Restaurant, a Vietnamese restaurant in Richmond, Va., with more than 50 taps and a selection of more than 200 bottles.

HopCat ranks No. 1 in CraftBeer.com’s poll for the North Central Region.

Ann Arbor-based Ashley’s ranks No. 3 in the region.

“All of the participating bars in this contest are reflective of the diverse craft brewing movement,” said Julia Herz, publisher of CraftBeer.com and craft beer program director for the Brewers Association. “Their vibrant atmospheres parallel the passion and unique personalities that distinguish America’s small and independent producers.”

HopCat has consistently been named a top beer bar — from Draft Magazine’s 100 best beer bars in America to the No. 3 beer bar in the world by BeerAdvocate — since it opened in 2008.

Next year, HopCat could find itself on the ranking twice, with its new East Lansing bar open with 100 taps. The bar opened this summer with a record-breaking tap takeover by Short’s Brewing Co.
