A Lansing-based health care system began work this week to replace a 1950s hospital in West Michigan — with a $25-million new one.

Sparrow Health System broke ground on a new Sparrow Ionia Hospital, to replace the existing 25-bed facility, which dates to 1953.

The hospital

The next Sparrow Ionia Hospital will be on a 44-acre site five miles south of the existing hospital in the city of Ionia, on M-66, or South State Road, at the intersection with David Highway.

The hospital is scheduled to open in the spring of 2015.

The facility will be two stories and 63,000 square feet, with 22 beds and expanded emergency, surgery and outpatient services, including all digital radiology, private patient rooms and enhanced safety and security.

It is being built to LEED-certification standards and is designed by Hobbs + Black Associates of Ann Arbor.

The Christman Company of Lansing is the general contractor.

Decades-long wait

Sparrow officials said the hospital will be the first new hospital built in the surrounding region in decades.

“The new Sparrow Ionia Hospital will provide Ionia County residents with a modern ‘green,’ patient-centered facility,” said Bill Roeser, president/CEO of Sparrow Ionia Hospital. “It’s a demonstration of Sparrow’s commitment to providing the residents of Ionia County access to the latest technology with nationally recognized care in a healing environment.”

Financing for Sparrow Ionia will come from a 30-year loan from the Sparrow Health System at 4-percent interest, according to the Certificate of Need application filed by Sparrow Health System.

The site of the existing hospital has numerous limitations, including a lack of space and parking, according to the CON filing.

Sparrow Health

Sparrow Health System is mid Michigan’s largest health care system, with two Lansing campuses, plus Sparrow Clinton Memorial Hospital in St. Johns, Sparrow Ionia and an affiliate, Carson City Hospital.

Sparrow is Michigan’s first member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, which gives Sparrow physicians access to Mayo Clinic expertise and clinical resources for patients at the Sparrow hospitals, according to the Sparrow website.
