Grand Rapids Griffins serve 'Hat Trick' eating challenge

Following in the highly caloric footsteps of their colleagues at the West Michigan Whitecaps, the front office of the Grand Rapids Griffins has decided to enter into the sports foodie market.

The "Hat Trick"

The AHL defending Calder Cup champions are offering what the franchise calls the "Hat Trick," which has been described as “a three-pronged gastronomic test.”

It consists of three jumbo hot dogs with a choice of toppings, a three-patty burger and fries.

The Hat Trick will sell for $20, and whoever can eat the whole thing in 20 sure-to-be-memorable minutes will win a T-shirt and the personal satisfaction of “having consumed an unthinkable number of calories to fuel them as they cheer on the Griffins.”

The Griffins will offer the Hat Trick at every non-Friday home game, with the first one coming up on Wednesday, when they host the Charlotte Checkers.

The delicacy can be ordered at the guest services desk, behind section 104, and picked up at concession stand No. 2, behind section 110.

SAVOR, the concessionaire at Van Andel Arena, is the chief cook behind the Hat Trick. 

Calder cups

SAVOR is also introducing a series of three championship souvenir pop cups this season.

SAVOR will release each souvenir cup separately over the season, so fans can collect all three.

The cups, filled with soda, will cost $5.25 and feature scenes from the team’s on-ice championship celebration in Syracuse last June. The cups are dishwasher safe.

The first cup will feature the team photo. The second will show East Grand Rapids native and Griffins forward Luke Glendening hoisting the Calder Cup. The third has shots of Griffins captain Jeff Hoggan and teammate Triston Grant lifting the trophy.

New menu items

If the Hat Trick is too much too soon, SAVOR has added other menu items for the season and all will be available at every home game.

  • new selection of Michigan craft beers
  • Fans can make their own burgers, with up to 10 toppings, at concession stand No. 6, behind section 104. The burger costs $7.75; with fries, it’s $10.50
  • A Guinness bratwurst is available for $5.50 at concession stands No. 6 and No. 1 on the lobby level. SAVOR is cooking every batch of brats in a half-barrel of Guinness
  • Dippin’ Dots are $4.75 in front of the Tim Horton’s stand, and fresh smoothies are $5.25 at the Grab & Go kiosk, behind section 125.

Whitecaps pig

The Whitecaps originated the local sports foodie phenomenon in their initial season with the Swimming Pig.

The now-famous pig is a sandwich that features an eight ounce, center-cut pork chop.

The menu item became so popular that the baseball franchise created a team mascot for it.

The Caps will ask its fans to vote for a new menu item this winter, as the organization has for the past five years.
