A group of “super-serious coffee nerds” handpicked by the lifestyle media property Thrillist rates a coffee shop in downtown Grand Rapids as the third-best "roaster" in the U.S.

Madcap Coffee represents the region on the national raking, which Thrillist, a site focused on recommendations, says it developed to pick the “crema” of the nation’s coffee-roasting crop.

“The history of American coffee's broken down into three distinct waves: Folgers in your cup, Starbucks on your block . . . and a new crop of artisan roasters, building brands based on sustainability, quality and really, really cute packaging,” the article reads.

The voting team was made up of 11 coffee writers and shop owners across the country.

In the ranking, Thrillist says Madcap’s “supreme bean” is Oktoberfest, from Ethiopia and Costa Rica.

Madcap is “known for their meticulous design and a unique varietal series, in which they source eight different types of beans from the same farm,” the article reads.

"Madcap may not come from a large metropolitan area, but they push forward with unique varietal series and Sunday tasting experiences,” writes judge Brian Jones, of Dear Coffee I Love You. “They've also got a stellar brand, one of my favorites, by renowned designers Chuck Anderson and Seth Herman.”
