A Grand Rapids commercial construction company is opening a second location this week, but one that's south of the city.

Location

Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. will officially celebrate its expansion into the southwest Michigan market tomorrow with a grand-opening event at its new office in the Haymarket Building, which is situated in an historic downtown Kalamazoo district, at 161 E. Michigan Ave. The event will start at 4:15 p.m.

“Having a true local presence is very important to us at O-A-K. All of our projects are intertwined with the communities in which they’re built,” said Frank Stanek, O-A-K president and CEO.

Area ties

O-A-K has a long construction history that dates back to its start in 1891, and since then, the firm has completed a number of major projects in the Kalamazoo area.

For instance, the company built additions and the gymnasium at the old Kalamazoo High School in 1912. The O-A-K project portfolio also has the 1940 construction of Fort Custer on it.

“We have multiple projects in progress in southwest Michigan and look forward to continued growth in the region," Stanek said. "We want to show the Kalamazoo community that we are fully committed to the people and organizations in this area."

Branch head

Tom Stanek, Frank’s brother and colleague in the business, will lead the Kalamazoo branch as its director of operations.

He will be responsible for developing business in the southwest market, managing the office’s resources and ensuring that projects are successfully completed.

Tom Stanek has 24 years of industry experience and graduated from Western Michigan University, which is based in Kalamazoo.

O-A-K

O-A-K has been a major builder for years and oversees more than $150 million in construction projects annually.

The company specializes in the education, commercial and industrial markets.

O-A-K is also an employee-owned company with 62 corporate shareholders on its staff.
