Change Ups: Ottawa County tapped for public health award

The Ottawa County Department of Public Health has received the 2013 Michigan Department of Community Health Director’s Award for Excellence in Local Public Health. The department was selected for its innovative collaboration and leadership efforts demonstrated by the Beach Health Educational Campaign developed by its environmental health team and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The project included a communications plan to help increase awareness among residents and tourists on how to prevent recreational water illnesses.

ACCOUNTING

Beene Garter partner David Barrons was honored with the Thomas M. Hoatlin Award for his efforts in encouraging a mutually beneficial relationship between the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Department of Treasury.

Brickley DeLong PC was named a 2013 All-Star Firm and Fastest-Growing Firm by INSIDE Public Accounting. The firm also announced the additions of staff accountants Donny Baird, David Milligan and Eric Huizing beginning in January 2014. Baird and Milligan will work in the Muskegon office and Huizing in the Grand Rapids office.

JoAnne Locatis has joined Baker Holtz as an administrative assistant. She will provide support to the tax department and perform billing and accounts receivable functions.

ARTS

Actors’ Theatre announced the addition of Debbie Playford, managing director.

AWARDS

Billy Bear Hug Foundation co-founder Charlie Wondergem was recognized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals West Michigan as the recipient of the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award.

Theresa Rowland, coordinator of the leadership program and the Violence Against Women Act grant for the Women’s Center, was selected to receive the Emerging Leader Award from the National Women’s Studies Association, which supports women and gender through teaching, learning, research and service in academic and other settings.

BUSINESS SERVICES

Great Lakes Caster of Wayland announced the acquisition of Atlantic Caster, headquartered in Richmond, Va. Atlantic Caster will operate under the name CasterDepot.

EDUCATION

The 2013 Open Doors report recognized Calvin College as one of the top-five baccalaureate institutions in the U.S. for enrolling international students and for number of students who study abroad. Calvin has enrolled 426 students from outside the U.S.

The National Center for Educational Statistics has ranked Ferris State University sixth among its top 10 schools for construction management degrees.

Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber Inc. announced the additions of: Jeremy McDonald, senior civil engineer; Christopher Okonowski, civil field technician; Rick Powers, surveyor; Martin Jones, senior technician; Eric Ross, structural engineer; Vanessa Martin, civil engineer; and Bo Benson, mechanical engineer.

ENVIRONMENTAL

The Michigan West Coast Chamber of Commerce presented Site Work Solutions and Zeeland Record Co. Inc. with its IMPACT Award for their contributions to the Quincy Elementary Wetlands Project.

Bronson Family Medicine Downtown welcomed Ashley Foster, FNP. Bronson Internal Medicine Hospital Specialists welcomed Lisa Ryan, M.D. Bronson Internal Medicine Oshtemo welcomed Brenda Nishizawa, D.O., R.D. And Bronson Neuroscience Center welcomed neurointensivist Jeffrey Fletcher.

Lynne Doyle has been selected executive director of Community Mental Health of Ottawa County. Doyle previously served as deputy director and has been employed in various positions with Ottawa County over the last 20 years. 

Diversified Medical Staffing LLC announced the addition of Carol Helsel, director of operations and human resources.

Growing Smiles Pediatric Dentistry announced the opening of a new office at 1750 Grand Ridge Court NE, Suite 202, Grand Rapids.

Dr, Kevin Howard, chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and orthopedic surgery residency director at Metro Health Hospital, has been named a fellow by the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics. Also, Metro Healthhas been recertified as a primary stroke center by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program.

HUMAN SERVICES

D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s has received $500,000 from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis’ Affordable Housing Program to refurbish residential houses on its Knapp Street campus that serves abused and neglected children throughout Michigan.

Jared Rodriguez, president/CEO of the Calder Group, has joined the Community Literacy Initiative Advisory Council as co-chair.

Barnes & Thornburg LLP has received 87 first-tier rankings in the 2014 U.S. News Best Lawyers Best Law Firm rankings. 

Hilger Hammond PC announced it has received Tier 1 ranking in the 2014 U.S. News Best Law Firm list.

MANUFACTURING

Perrigo Co. in Allegan announced the promotion of Kirk Walter to senior director, tablet value stream, non-analgesics for the cough and cold tablet area. Walter will manage a portion of the large consumer health care tablet operations that supports $800 million in sales revenue.

Gov. Rick Synder announced the appointment of John Loeks of Grand Rapids and the reappointment of Hopwood DePree of Holland to the Michigan Film Office Advisory Council.

RETAIL

The National Ice Cream Retailers Association annual meeting conferred third place to Sweet Temptations of Grand Haven for its Brickle Chip Ice Cream.

SERVICES

Electronic Entertainment Exchange Inc. announced it has purchased the Muskegon Plan N Trade franchise. Plans include closing the store and opening a new one the northwest corner of Seaway and Seminole in early January and naming it E3 Trade and Repair.

Atlas Van Lines has named 42 of its moving agents winners of the annual Milton Hill Quality Award for showcasing industry excellence and the highest quality of customer service under the Atlas name.
