A former Grand Rapids attorney will become the state’s solicitor general next month.

Attorney General Bill Schuette announced Thursday the appointment of attorney Aaron Lindstrom as solicitor general.

He will take over the post on Dec. 7.

Lindstrom joined the state’s Solicitor General Bureau in 2012.

Prior to that, he worked in the appellate practice group at Warner Norcross & Judd LLP in Grand Rapids.

His legal career has also included a stint with the appellate and constitutional law practice group of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher's Washington, D.C. office.

Lindstrom is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served in the Army for five years on active duty as a cavalry officer. After completing his service, he graduated from the University of Chicago Law School.

Case history

Lindstrom has worked on numerous appeals in federal and state appellate courts, including seven cases heard on the merits in the U.S. Supreme Court.

He has received a distinguished brief award for briefing in the Michigan Supreme Court and a best brief award from the National Association of Attorneys General for briefing in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Appellate advocacy

He will work with Deputy Solicitor General Eric Restuccia to advance the Department of Attorney General's appellate advocacy in both state and federal courts, according to the department.

"Michigan's Solicitor General Bureau has developed a strong reputation as a national leader in appellate advocacy," Schuette said. "Aaron Lindstrom and Eric Restuccia are two talented professionals, and, together, they will ensure our appellate team achieves continued success in the courtroom. The people of Michigan are fortunate to have their commitment and dedication."

Grand Rapids ties

Lindstrom succeeds Solicitor General John Bursch, who will return to private practice at Warner Norcross in December.

"The Grand Rapids Bar Association joins family and friends in congratulating Aaron Lindstrom on his appointment as solicitor general,” said Kristin Vanden Berg, GRBA president. “He is a very talented and accomplished attorney, and it comes as no surprise — given the caliber of attorneys living and practicing in the Grand Rapids area — that Mr. Lindstrom succeeds John Bursch, another talented Grand Rapids attorney."
