Airport connects to Atlanta
Delta Air Lines is taking off for Atlanta via southwest Michigan.
AZO to ATL
Beginning in February, the airline will offer Saturday flights from Kalamazoo Battle Creek International Airport to Atlanta, departing at 6:45 a.m. and arriving at 8:50 a.m.
Delta will also offer Saturday evening flights from Atlanta to Kalamazoo, departing at 7:45 p.m. and arriving at 9:50 p.m.
At this time, the Saturday flights are scheduled to discontinue in mid August, following the peak travel season.
The service will utilize a 50-seat CRJ Regional Jet.
“Delta is attempting to tap into the leisure market heading south, into Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean,” explained David Reid, interim executive director at the airport. “This is a first step in gauging interest. We are hoping that this will lead to additional Atlanta service.”
Though the airline is targeting the leisure traveler, Reid said the hope is that it will also appeal to the business market.
None of the airline’s competitors offers flights direct to Atlanta at this time.
Delta Air Lines also offers daily non-stop service to Detroit and Minneapolis from Kalamazoo.
Reid added that the traffic at the Kalamazoo airport has recently trended upward.
“Our monthly numbers have continued to grow when compared to numbers from the same period last year, 3-percent growth compared to last September and October,” Reid said. “We are still slightly down from last year, due to the departure of Direct Air, but the trend is beginning to reverse.”
