Christmas tree recycling sets up across county
Once the decorations are removed from the Christmas tree and you’ve got it back outside, what do you do with it?
The Kent County Department of Public Works has provided a list of recycling options for West Michigan cities, townships and villages across the county.
Make sure to remove all ornaments, tinsel, nails, tree stands and any other decorations, as well as any plastic bags prior to drop off.
A few villages and townships have yet to share their recycling information, so if your community is not on the list below, it’s best to contact it directly, said Alli Kneisel, resource recovery specialist at Kent County.
In addition to recycling, composting is also a good option.
Christmas tree recycling
Ada Township: Ada Township residents may drop off Christmas trees and wreaths for recycling to the back parking lot of Ada Township Park from Dec. 26-Jan. 13 between 7:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m.
The trees will be recycled into wood chips, while the wire from the wreaths will be recycled. Please remove any decorations, wires, strings, ribbons or other items from the trees that might interfere with a chipper. Residential Christmas items only — no yard waste, trimmings or commercial businesses.
Alpine Township: Residents may once again drop off their live-cut Christmas trees in an area behind the Alpine Township offices, at 5255 Alpine Ave. NW, marked with an orange snow fence. All bags, holiday decorations and tree stands should be removed. Program ends Jan. 31.
Cannon Township: Cannon Township will be providing a drop off for Christmas trees from Dec. 27-Jan. 13. For those of you who like to be ahead of the game, a self-service dumpster will be in the drop-off area on the west side of the township building in the parking lot, starting Dec. 27.
Members of the RHS Honor Society will be volunteering their time on Jan. 11 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. to help unload your tree. Donations will be accepted, and appreciated, to benefit the Honor Society. The trees will be recycled, so please remove all wire, tinsel, etc. No wreaths. Trees will not be accepted after 3 p.m. on Jan. 13.

East Grand Rapids: Christmas trees may be placed out for collection by the Public Works Department from Monday of the first full week of January through Friday of the second full week of January.
Items with metal attached, trees stands, wired garlands and wreaths, cannot be collected and must be disposed of separately by the resident. Trees should be placed out for collection prior to the resident’s regular yard waste collection during this two-week collection service. Thereafter, residents should store their discarded tree in a rear yard until city yard-waste collection services resume in April.
