Fans of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” will be pleased to learn that the gym franchise featured on the show is moving into Grand Rapids.

Planet Fitness, one of the nation’s fastest-growing health club franchises, is opening two gyms in the region, marking the 33rd and 34th Planet Fitness clubs in the state, according to Colliers International.

Planet Fitness opened a 25,000-square-foot gym in the RiverTown Center in Grandville last month, as well as a gym yesterday at Centerpointe Mall in Grand Rapids, said Brittany Tuori, a spokesperson for Colliers International.

Both clubs will be open for 24 hours a day, every day of the week.

Northville-based franchisees Bryan and Laura Rief will run the two clubs. The couple owns about 15 Planet Fitness clubs in the Detroit area and Toledo, Ohio.

“Opening two clubs simultaneously, one of which (in Grand Rapids) will be one of the largest Planet Fitness Clubs in the U.S., is a testament to our confidence in the Grand Rapids market,” Bryan Rief said. “Both locations provide tons of parking, have great visibility and offer easy access to the surrounding area. And we’re opening just in time for the annual New Year’s rush.”

The Riefs have plans to open more Planet Fitness gyms in the Grand Rapids region over the next two to three years.

“We are aggressively looking for spaces in the 20,000 to 30,000-square-foot range with ample parking,” Rief said. “We are very optimistic about our continued growth opportunities in the Grand Rapids area.”
