University offers tax-prep help
University students and faculty volunteers are offering free income tax preparation sessions to low- and middle-income tax filers at spots across West Michigan.
In 2013, 75 Davenport University students and alumni logged 6,600 volunteer hours and totaled $6.1 million in tax refunds and credits.
This year, the free tax preparation service will be available at 17 different sites, including Davenport's Cook Center in Grand Rapids and its Holland and Kalamazoo campuses.
There also are sites in Coopersville, Hastings and Wyoming.
The faculty and students are providing assistance in conjunction with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, a cooperative effort of the Internal Revenue Service and nonprofit groups that trains volunteers to prepare tax returns in communities across the U.S.
Volunteers have been certified by the IRS to participate.
