West Michigan showed, once more, that it can hang with the best of the world after the second week of the annual “best of” rankings at RateBeer.com.

Bell’s

Galesburg-based Bell’s Brewery was named one of the top 5 breweries in the world by RateBeer.com, which is a community of "hundreds of thousands of members from more than 100 countries."

The ranking notes the consistency of Bell's four beers found in the Top 100: Black Note Stout, Expedition Stout, Hopslam and Two Hearted Ale.

Bell’s Two Hearted took home the prestigious nod of Best IPA in the world.

Bell’s Hopslam is the fourth-best Double IPA in the world, behind craft beer behemoths Russian River Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger and the Alchemist’s Heady Topper.

Top breweries in the world

1. AleSmith Brewing Co., San Diego

2. Hill Farmstead Brewery, Greensboro, Vt.

3. Three Floyds Brewing Co., Munster, Ind.

4. Russian River Brewing, Santa Rosa, Calif.

5. Bell’s Brewery, Galesburg

Founders

Grand Rapids-based Founders Brewing Co. was named one the top 100 breweries in the world.

Founders’ Kentucky Breakfast Stout, or KBS, is the No. 1 beer in the U.S. for 2013. The barrel-aged stout also took home the title for best stout in the world.

Founders’ Porter was named the third-best porter in the world, with one of five gold medals given in the category.

Other Michigan breweries

Dark Horse, Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, Short’s Brewing Co. and Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. all represented Michigan on the top 100 breweries in the world.

Shorts Brewing Company’s Mmm Kay, a premium lager, is the No. 6 pale lager in the world. Shorts also found its way onto the dark lager category, coming in 10th with its Bourbon Barrel Sustenance Black Beer.

Marshall’s Dark Horse Brewing Co. saw its Bourbon Barrel Plead the 5th Imperial Stout makes its way into the top 100. Dark Horse’s Reserve Special Black Ale, a porter, ranks No. 10.

Bourbon Barrel Fourth Dementia Old Ale by Warren’s Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. is the 11th-best strong ale in the world.

Kuhnhenn also found its Raspberry and Blueberry eisbocks also made their way into the top specialty beers in the world.

Cider and mead

Michigan is riding high in the cider and mead categories.

In cider, Almar Orchards took home three of the top 15 top ciders in the world.

Meanwhile, the state took home 13 of 15 top mead nods.

Kuhnhenn has five of the top meads, including the top-rated Bourbon Barrel French Toast Mead.

Nektar Meadery also made waves with five meads in the rankings as well.
