Sunset Retirement Communities and Services, a nonprofit retirement community for senior citizens, is scheduled to break ground Monday on a 69,000-square-foot addition to its Waterford Place campus.

According to information submitted to Georgetown Township, the project is valued at more than $12.3 million. Waterford Place is located at 1725 Port Sheldon St., Jenison.

The expansion project is slated to add about 50 new staff to Waterford Place. Positions needing to be filled include therapists, nurses, certified nursing aids, dietary staff, housekeepers and maintenance workers.

The construction aspect of the development also is expected to add 50 new jobs.

The project will require expansion on both the first and second floors. The first-floor expansion will see most of the major work, including the addition of 40 private rooms with private baths, as well as a pool, a resistance jet and other amenities such as bathing spas and a beauty salon.

It will also include an expanded kitchen, an office for Huntington Bank, a computer office, a medical treatment room and a rooftop patio.

The second floor expansion will include 24 assisted living units, each ranging in size from about 275 to 575 square feet.

Progressive AE will serve as the project’s managing architect, while construction duties will be shared between Elzinga & Volkers and The Christman Co.

The work is expected to be finished by fall 2015.

“Sunset is committed to the continuous improvement of Georgetown Township,” said Chad Tuttle, CEO of Sunset Retirement. “We are able to address a need in the township for short-term rehabilitation by building a state-of-the-art health care addition to our Waterford Place campus on Port Sheldon.”
