A big real estate fish is swimming deeper into the region’s second-home market.

Lakeshore presence

Chicago-based @properties, which said it is Chicago’s largest residential real estate brokerage, is strengthening its foothold in the southwest Michigan lakeshore with a 2,400-square-foot office in St. Joseph, at 3399 S. Lakeshore Drive.

The office, which currently has about six employees, marks @properties’ second office in the area, after it opened a space in New Buffalo last winter.

@properties plans to expand in the area and hire about 15-20 more employees for the St. Joseph office over the course of the year, said @properties co-founder Thaddeus Wong.

@properties’ St. Joseph office will serve clients throughout Berrien, Cass, Van Buren and Allegan counties.

The firm moved into the area to primarily serve the second-home market and has “quickly established relationships with local buyers and sellers,” said Michael Golden, @properties co-founder.

“This new office allows us to more effectively serve clients throughout the entire region,” Golden said.

More expansion

Wong added that the firm is looking to build market share in the area, and expansion shouldn’t be a problem, because there hasn’t been much competition in the area.

Wong expects his firm to be the top real estate brokerage in the area by the end of the year.

“On our end, it’s also helping us get to Saugatuck-Douglas,” Wong said. “We’re looking to open an office there as well. We’re looking at space now, and were’ hoping to be open by summer 2015.”
