Developer builds Hilton Homewood Suites
A second Hilton Homewood Suites is coming to the region.
The four story, 97-room Hilton Homewood Suites will be built in Portage at the Trade Centre Way development, at 420 Trade Centre Way.
Work on the vacant space is scheduled to begin this summer and be completed in 2015.
There is one other Hilton Homewood Suites in the region in Grand Rapids, according to the brand’s website.
The 86,083-square-foot hotel with 100 parking spaces was announced by Roger Hinman, owner of Hinman Company in Portage, a development, property management and leasing firm, and Joe Gesmundo, founder of American Village Builders in Portage, a development and construction firm.
The Trade Centre Way development was created by Hinman and Gesmundo, who purchased the 32-acre property in 2003 when it was vacant land.
The hotel will be owned by Fargo, N.D.-based TMI Hospitality, a property development and management company, according to Hinman.
The developers said the hotel will be a new Hilton Homewood Suites prototype design.
“Great development projects can take time,” Hinman said. “We have been presented with numerous opportunities that we felt didn’t quite fit our plan. We are very committed to delivering a high quality and successful development at this essential gateway to the community and know that the Hilton Homewood Suites will help us to meet these goals.”
The hotel, next to I-94, will plan to attract people traveling for both business and recreation — tied, for instance, to the area’s large employers and colleges, Hinman said.
The hotel will be the second hotel at the Trade Centre Way development, after the Courtyard by Marriot last fall.
“The Hilton and the Marriott will have common ownership,” Hinman said. “Hilton and Marriott customers have a strong loyalty to these brands when they are travelling, and the goal was to attract both sets of loyal customers by building these two modern hotel brands in the same location.”

The development also includes two fully occupied office buildings, with about 200,000 square feet of leasable space. The tenants include Stryker, Plante Moran and S2 Games.
There are also plans for the remainder of the development to include restaurants and a new three-story office building.
