A Grand Rapids-based hospital is among the 100 Great Hospitals in America.

Becker’s Hospital Review, a monthly business and legal publication relating to hospitals and health systems, recognized Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital as part of its 100 Great Hospitals in America in the 2014 edition of its annual list.

Kevin Splaine, president of Spectrum Health Hospitals in Grand Rapids, said Butterworth’s recognition as a hospital striving for improved outcomes and focus on quality improvement is appreciated.

“This is a reflection of the hard work and effort put forth by our employees and physicians,” said Splaine in a written statement.

Spectrum Health Butterworth was founded in 1873 as St. Mark’s Home and Hospital and renamed in 1894 in honor of the charitable donation given by Richard Edward Emerson Butterworth. Butterworth Hospital is one of four Spectrum Health Medical Center facilities and is a clinical leader in such areas as cardiovascular, orthopedics, neurosciences and emergency care, according to Spectrum Health’s website.

Spectrum Health Butterworth is a 1,048-bed facility, and employs more than 7,700 individuals. The hospital was recognized by the U.S. News & World Report’s 2013-2014 as ranked among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for endocrinology, pulmonology and gynecology, according to Becker’s Hospital Review.

The editorial team of the 100 Great Hospitals in America takes into account other nominations and rankings, from sources including Truven Health Analytics’ 100 Top Hospitals, Healthgrades and Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Other sources considered are U.S. News & World Report and the Leapfrog group. After research and reviewing national rankings, a panel of industry experts then issues feedback on the initial hospitals nominated.

According to Becker’s, the hospitals recognized provide best-in-class patient care, have made medical and scientific breakthroughs, and serve as academic hubs or local mainstays in their respective communities.

Other hospitals from Michigan listed in the 2014 edition of the 100 Great Hospitals in America, include Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.
