Hotel checks into third market
A hotel is traveling east to build its third location in the state.
CityFlatsHotel, which operates boutique hotels in downtown Grand Rapids and Holland, said last week that it plans to transform a vacant three-story building in Port Huron into a hotel, at 301 Huron Ave.
The 42,000-square-foot hotel with 38 to 40 rooms is scheduled to open next spring, said Jack Peaphon, a CityFlatsHotel spokesperson.
The Port Huron hotel will be designed after CityFlatsHotel’s other locations.
The hotel will feature a lobby and ballroom space on the first floor, possibly more meeting space on the second floor and rooms will be on the second and third floors, Peaphon said.
Charter House Innovations, a Holland-based design company and CityFlatsHotel’s parent company, will work on the hotel's interior design.
The hotel hasn’t named a contractor for the project.
Downtown Port Huron
The historic Port Huron building, constructed in 1922, once housed Sperry’s Department Store, but has been empty for the last 10 years, Peaphon said.
The building has been owned since 2011 by Sperry’s Landmark, which recently signed a licensing agreement with CityFlatsHotel.
CityFlatsHotel will manage the hotel, but Sperry’s will own the building.
“After several years of determination, Sperry's Landmark is looking forward to welcoming CityFlatsHotel to downtown Port Huron,” said Brent Marsall, principal, Sperry’s Landmark.
CityFlatsHotel chose Port Huron for its next expansion step, because the area has been growing and the hotel owners wanted to be in an urban location “where you can walk to everything,” Peaphon said.
“There is nothing more exciting than to see your baby take their first steps,” said Chuck Reid, owner, CityFlatsHotel. “We are honored and excited to be chosen to expand our CityFlatsHotel brand, along with developing a new center of activity for the bustling Port Huron downtown.”
The CityFlatsHotel Holland was the first hotel in the Midwest to receive LEED Gold certification.
Since then, CityFlatsHotel Grand Rapids has also received LEED Gold certification.
