A local steel supplier plans to open a $16 million flat-rolled steel plant in a Midwest port town.

Mill Steel Co. in Grand Rapids said Monday that it plans to buy and expand a building at the Port of Indiana Maritime Center in Jeffersonville to about 225,000 square feet, making it the Ohio River port's newest operation.

The company said operations will begin at the complex in June, and it plans to begin hiring this week.

The plant, which is just north of Louisville, Ky., could employ about 45 workers by 2017.

The company also plans to operate an accredited testing lab in Jeffersonville.

Mill Steel processes and distributes flat-rolled carbon steel for the automotive, construction, appliance and general manufacturing industries.
