Coffee shop co-founder ranks as No. 3 barista in US
A businessman and barista is among the best at his craft in the nation.
Madcap Coffee co-founder Trevor Corlett took third place at the U.S. Barista Competition during the U.S. Coffee Championships last weekend in Seattle.
Corlett took second at his regional and presented a new routine at the national event, based on two Colombian coffees, San Sebastian and Las Serranias.
Corlett also accepted the Award for Service to the Association for his dedication to volunteering, teaching and event planning.
Andrew Grassmick also represented Grand Rapids-based Madcap at the barista competition, placing fifth at his regional and 14th at the national event.
And Madcap’s Colin Whitcomb competed at the event’s Brewers Cup, where he attempted to blend a perfect coffee.
“Colin felt that in a competition where balance and complexity of flavor are weighed highly, that using two stunning coffees could give him the advantage,” according to a Madcap blog post. “Some hiccups in the final minutes of his routine kept Colin just 1.2 points from the finals round of the Brewers Cup.”
