Food maker ranks among nation's 'Top 50 Companies for Diversity'

A food maker is one of the nation’s top companies for diversity — for the third year in a row.

Kellogg Company in Battle Creek ranks No. 31 on this year's ranking of the “Top 50 Companies for Diversity” by DiversityInc. The company ranks No. 32 on the 2013 ranking and No. 49 in 2012.

Kellogg also ranks on DiversityInc's specialty rankings for the first time, placing third among top companies for diversity councils and sixth among top companies for employee resource groups.

DiversityInc is a publication focused on highlighting the business benefits of diversity. This is its 15th year recognizing the “Top 50 Companies for Diversity.”

Methodology

Companies in the ranking are evaluated in four key categories: the CEOs commitment to diversity and inclusion; human capital; corporate and organizational communication on diversity-related issues; and supplier diversity.

This year, 1,215 companies participated in the survey.

Women at Kellogg

Kellogg pointed to its commitment to adding women to its company leadership and its board of directors as one of the reasons for its ascent on the ranking.

Earlier this year, Kellogg announced the appointment of two additional women to its board of directors.

The company's board representation now consists of 58 percent men and 42 percent women, more than double the Fortune 500 company average of 16.9 percent of board seats being held by women.

In 2013, the Kellogg promoted three more women to its Global Leadership Team, for a total of eight women.

2020 Women on Boards, a nonprofit campaign committed to increasing the percentage of women in corporate governance, also recently recognized Kellogg for its commitment to female leadership.

The organization lists Kellogg among its "Winning Companies" that understand the importance of board diversity and have 20 percent or more women on its board of directors.

Inclusion at Kellogg

"Everyone wants to contribute in meaningful ways and have equal opportunities to succeed,” said Mark King, global head of Diversity and Inclusion, Kellogg. “We also want to do this, while being our true selves in the workplace. A culture that understands our differences and embraces them is how Kellogg brings our best to the workplace and marketplace and, ultimately, how we achieve growth."

Kellogg said it has a 100-year history of diversity and inclusion, going back to the company’s founder, W.K. Kellogg, who employed women in the workplace and reached "across cultural boundaries."

A decade ago, Kellogg furthered its commitment to diversity and inclusion, making it a key corporate initiative, and in 2005, it established the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

The Office of Diversity “has been singularly focused on recruiting and retaining diverse employees, creating awareness of diversity issues, fostering a supportive, positive environment where inclusive behaviors are the norm and embedding accountability for diversity throughout the organization,” according to Kellogg’s website.
